British GP: Qualifying - Verstappen takes pole as British drivers make history
Red Bull driver Max Verstappen claimed pole position for the 2023 British Grand Prix, making it five in a row for the Dutchman and seven for the season so far.
Verstappen set a time of 1:25.892 on his final lap of qualifying to beat Ferrari's Carlos Sainz by 0.072 seconds. Sainz's team-mate Charles Leclerc was third, with Lando Norris of McLaren and Lewis Hamilton of Mercedes completing the top five.
It is the first time since 1967 that three British drivers have qualified in the top three for a Formula 1 Grand Prix. Hamilton, Norris and George Russell of Mercedes all took advantage of the wet conditions to qualify in the top half of the grid.
The race takes place over 52 laps of the 5891-kilometre Silverstone Circuit on Sunday afternoon and Verstappen will be looking to extend his lead in the drivers' championship. The Dutchman has won six of the 11 races so far this season and leads Sainz by 46 points.
