Borussia Dortmund's Historic Triumph
20th Anniversary of UEFA Champions League Victory
May 28, 1997: A Night to Remember
On May 28, 1997, Borussia Dortmund wrote their name into the history books by becoming the first German club to lift the UEFA Champions League trophy. In a thrilling final played at the Olympiastadion in Munich, Dortmund defeated Juventus 3-1.
Karl-Heinz Riedle opened the scoring for Dortmund in the early stages of the second half. Juventus equalized through Alessandro Del Piero, but Dortmund regained the lead through Lars Ricken with just 10 minutes remaining. Substitute Andreas Möller sealed the victory with a goal in injury time.
The victory was a crowning achievement for Dortmund, who had only won the Bundesliga title once before. It was also a triumph for German football, as no German club had ever lifted the European Cup before.
